The table below is a planning shortcut, not a model recommendation. It assumes 75 gallons/person/day and a seven-day design interval plus 20% reserve.
| Hardness | Daily load | Planning band |
|---|---|---|
| 5 gpg | 1,875 grains/day | 24,000 grain band |
| 10 gpg | 3,750 grains/day | 32,000 grain band |
| 15 gpg | 5,625 grains/day | 48,000 grain band |
| 20 gpg | 7,500 grains/day | 64,000 grain band |
| 25 gpg | 9,375 grains/day | 80,000 grain band |
| 30 gpg | 11,250 grains/day | 96,000 grain band |
When to size differently
Use your measured softened-water usage if it differs materially from 75 gallons/person/day. Iron/manganese, very high flow, efficiency goals and manufacturer-specific usable capacities can also change the final selection.
Why household size is only one input
A 5-person household does not have one universally correct softener size. Capacity changes directly with hardness and with the amount of water that actually passes through the softener. Using this site's 75-gallon planning default, a 5-person home at 10 gpg produces about 3,750 grains/day; the seven-day load plus 20% reserve is about 31,500 grains. If your measured softened-water use is lower or higher, the result should move with it.
Do not forget peak flow
Grain capacity answers “how much hardness can be exchanged before regeneration?” It does not answer “can the system keep up while several fixtures run?” A larger household often has more simultaneous use, so check the softener's continuous or rated service flow and pressure drop separately. A unit with enough theoretical grain capacity can still feel undersized if flow through the valve or resin bed is too restrictive.
Inputs worth measuring before purchase
Use a current hardness result in gpg or mg/L as CaCO₃, estimate only the water you intend to soften, and use a measured peak-flow value when possible. Private wells should also be tested for relevant water-quality issues; iron, manganese, sediment and pH can affect treatment order. For health-related contaminants, the site intentionally stops short of prescribing a generic treatment.
For a custom number, use the softener size calculator and then verify the chosen product's usable capacity, salt efficiency and service-flow specifications.
