Point-of-entry treats the house
A point-of-entry (POE) system is installed where water enters the building and treats water before it reaches most fixtures. This makes sense for problems that affect plumbing, bathing, laundry or appliances — provided the system can handle household service flow.
Point-of-use treats one location
A point-of-use (POU) device treats water at a particular tap or outlet. Under-sink filtration and reverse osmosis are common examples. POU can be more targeted when the goal concerns drinking and cooking water rather than every shower, toilet and hose bib.
Why scope changes cost and sizing
POE equipment must handle much higher flow and a much larger total water volume. POU equipment sees less water, which can reduce equipment and consumable costs for a narrow goal. The right choice is not simply “whole house is better”; it depends on where treatment is useful.
Certification still follows the exact claim
NSF standards cover both point-of-entry and point-of-use products in different contexts. Certification should be checked for the exact contaminant-reduction or performance claim — not treated as a generic badge that means a product solves every water problem.
A simple decision rule
- Scale throughout the house: consider hardness treatment at POE.
- Sediment affecting fixtures: investigate POE sediment control.
- Drinking-water-only goal: consider whether targeted POU treatment is sufficient.
- Health contaminant: use verified test data and a treatment certified for that exact reduction claim.
