Do not choose a softener from the nominal grain number alone. Compare usable capacity at a stated salt dose, service flow, pressure drop, resin volume, regeneration water, drain requirements and the exact certification/performance data for the model.
1. Usable capacity at the salt dose you will run
A nominal label is not enough to compare operating points. Ask for the capacity delivered at the programmed salt dose, then run that value through the softener efficiency calculator.
2. Service flow and pressure drop
Your house needs flow during overlapping fixture use. Compare the product’s continuous/service flow at a stated pressure drop with your whole-house flow target. A peak number without duration or pressure-drop context is not an equivalent specification.
3. Resin volume and tank configuration
Resin volume affects capacity and flow characteristics. Twin-tank systems can also behave differently from a single tank when uninterrupted softened water matters. Use the actual manufacturer configuration rather than inferring it from a product nickname.
4. Regeneration water, salt and drain requirements

5. Certification and performance claims
NSF identifies NSF/ANSI 44 as the standard covering cation-exchange water softeners. Certification is not a generic badge for every possible claim, so verify the exact model/listing and what was actually evaluated.
